About us
The Living in Harmony program is an Australian Government initiative administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The program is designed to encourage all Australians to contribute to, and build upon Australia's social cohesion.
The aims of the Living in Harmony program have evolved since 1998 to meet the changing needs of the Australian community. The program’s current focus is to build social cohesion through the promotion of the following concepts:
- Respect
- Participation
- A sense of belonging
- Australian values.
The Living in Harmony program is implemented through several complementary elements:
Funded Community Projects
Funding of local community projects designed to engage the whole community in building positive community relations.

Partnerships
Partnerships with iconic national and regional organisations such as large community, sporting and government bodies that work together to promote Australian values, mutual respect and particpation.

Funds to support communities responding to crises and emerging issues outside the annual funded community projects round.

Public Information Strategy
Utilising outcomes from past funded community projects and partnerships to develop resources for wide dissemination and use in various sectors of the community. The Information and Product Development strategy also manages Harmony Day which is held on 21 March each year.
