Project Name: AFL living in harmony

Project Summary:
The project seeks to address issues and barriers relating to inclusion and participation in the game and focussing on: new and emerging communities and their leadership; isolated groups and individuals; schools and education institutions; football clubs; and Indigenous Australia.
The 'AFL You Can Kick Goals' education package will engage teachers and school children and promote Australian values, leadership, mentoring and team orientated behaviours. There will also be a National Seminar Series that will include highlighting the important role Australian football plays in building respect and social cohesion through participation and inclusion.

Project Name: Y Challenge – celebrating diversity

Project Summary:
Australian Red Cross worked in partnership with the department, the education sector and community groups to develop and promote the Y Challenge – celebrating diversity resource (Tool Kit and supporting online resources). The Y Challenge – celebrating diversity resource is designed for primary and secondary school aged students across Australia, in particular within Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
The resource assists participants to develop and implement youth led projects that promote mutual respect, participation and a sense of belonging. During the trial phase more than 1700 young people were actively involved in projects that impacted on more than 5000 school and local community members.

Project Name: CricKids Playing in Harmony

Project Summary: The purpose of this project is to promote the principles of respect, justice, equality, fair play and friendship through the game of cricket and to introduce all Australian schools to the game. The project distributed 550 copies of the Crickids - playing in harmony curriculum and developed Australia's biggest cricket game, with 140 000 participants in 2007.

Project Name: Families and the Law in Australia: the Family Court working with New and Emerging Communities

Project Summary:
The partnership aims to develop and strengthen relations between communities and the Family Court, as well as facilitate cross-community engagement between different new and emerging communities around matters of families and the law. The report outlines the engagement models developed by the project to give practical insights for other organisations and government agencies who are thinking of developing their own engagement strategies. The report also presents the significant outcomes and learnings from the project.

Project Name: National Living Library Implementation Strategy (NLLS)

Project Summary:
The 'Living libraries' model aims to connect and strengthen local communities by bringing people together through open and safe conversation – helping to encourage understanding and foster community relationships and social cohesion. Living Libraries utilises volunteers from diverse backgrounds as 'books' to engage broader community 'readers' in one to one conversations that break down barriers and address misunderstanding and prejudice.
A website and a range of resources have been developed to assist in the establishment of Living Libraries, including a Resource Manual, DVD, a national network of Living Libraries organisers, a Youth Toolkit and an Indigenous Living Libraries Evaluation Report. The project has been extended until July 2010 with the help of Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) who will continue to promote the national implementation of the project whilst maintaining the website and network.

Project Name: Online Toolkit for Local Government (Building Neighbourhood Community Harmony)

Project Summary:
The project aims to distribute free resources to local councils, via a website called StepOne that will help councils address understanding and respect and community cohesion issues in culturally diverse neighbourhoods.
The toolkit will include case studies, a good practice guide, a list of useful websites, a 'how to start' guide and a web-form that will allow local councils to submit their own innovative projects for up-loading to the website.

Project Name: Peacesong tapestries

Project Summary:
The project has two main elements consisting of an interactive and mobile 'studio' where young Australians can create music, and a weekly radio program where the compositions are broadcast. SBS has commissioned Music House Pty Ltd to undertake the professional collation and production of the compositions. The program was promoted nationally on SBS Radios' sixty-eight language programs and the SBS website. The project held a national Harmony Day event in 2008 involving the SBS Youth Orchestra presenting the musical compositions arising out of the project.

Project Name: On the Same Wave – consolidate and extend

Project Summary:
The On the Same Wave – consolidate and extend project was funded in 2008 to expand on the work of the pilot project (initally conducted in NSW in partnership with Sutherland Shire Council) to include Vic, S.A, W.A, Tas and N.T. The project worked to develop and foster positive relationships between surf life saving staff, volunteers and members of diverse cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds; and to increase diversity in SLSA membership.
A community engagement strategy and Intensive English Language College curriculum was developed to provide new migrants with critical surf safety and tips on beach etiquette. A Club Diversity Recognition Scheme encouraged surf life saving clubs to adopt inclusive practices and actively participate in the project. The project aimed to embed the community engagement strategy and curriculum into core business practices in SLSA.
