Organisation: The Jewish Community Council of SA
Project Name: Project Abraham: Reaching out to Country
Amount: $174 220

Project Summary:
In South Australia, people of the Christianity, Islam and Judaism faiths were involved in this interfaith program that interacts with the Australian way of life to encourage a shared sense of belonging. The main objective was to develop respect and explore commonalities between the three Abrahamic Faiths, including promoting their common humanity and goals to build a more peaceful and tolerant world. The project involved a travelling exhibition to five regional centres, as well as holding Sunday afternoon seminars for the general community. School groups toured the exhibition and participated in an education program led by educators from the three faiths. Some 1600 people had direct contact with the project through the school program and seminars and 12,500 people saw the exhibition. The schools were also given copies of the Project Abraham CD-ROM, which includes a 100-page booklet on a PDF file and a power point presentation of the exhibition artefacts.

Project Summary:
Previous Partnership Projects
In partnership with Surf Life Saving Australia, Sutherland Shire Council worked with community leaders, groups, local schools (particularly upper primary and lower secondary students) and surf life saving clubs to deliver this project. It involved an engagement and education strategy that aimed to provide support for young Australians of all backgrounds to participate in appropriate beach usage. The project was intended to promote the importance of mutual respect among all users of the beach and public spaces within Sutherland Shire. Activities involved lectures, workshops, beach activity days, a Harmony Day beach carnival and the development a beach etiquette and safety DVD. The project’s activities aimed to educate and promote cooperation and mutual respect, and have been embedded into the council’s Community Education Program.

Project Name: Swapping Lives

Project Summary:
The project produced a television documentary on the experience of a young Australian and Indonesian who swapped families, schools and friends for three months.

Project Name: A Guide to the Role of Police of Australia

Project Summary:
This project involved consultaton with State and Territory police jurisdictions to develop an information booklet thought sought to explain Australian laws and the role of police in Australia to newly arrived migrants and refugees. The booklet included an explanation of the Constitution, government, criminal system and the nature of specific crimes, and was published in eight languages and distributed online.

Project Name: Towards a Better Understanding of Islam and the Muslim Community in Australia

Project Summary:
The partnership involved the employment of experienced personnel to work with the media to promote a better understanding of Islam and Muslims in Australia. This promoted and encouraged informed and accurate reporting, articles and media releases.

Project Name: Religion, Cultural Diversity and Social Cohesion in Contemporary Australia

Project Summary:
The project aimed to profile the religious diversity in Australia and the extent of inter-faith dialogue and co-operation. It identified emerging issues and challenges, and examined the contribution that religious frameworks and groups can make to civic duty, cultural respect, social equity and productive diversity.
