| The project is intended to work with a secondary
school in the Melbourne metropolitan area to develop resources,
structures, programs and activities aimed at fostering better
relations between students of diverse backgrounds, teachers,
parents and the school community. The project will be managed
by a steering committee of representatives from the school administration,
the parents as well as the VASS committee of Management. |

| The project is a 'progressive dialogue' between
rural communities and multicultural advocates from YWCA Victoria
and partners VIRWC to promote social harmony through community
participation. Women advocates will go to two rural areas in
a bus to create a forum for discussion in an organised highly
visible fashion with media coverage, banners, information bags,
etc. The first tour will go to Morwell on Harmony Day and the
second one to Ballarat in June. |

The project encourages multiracial and Indigenous young people
to work together to identify anti-racism strategies and to
develop and endorse of an anti-racism policy for their school
communities. This will provide the young people with confidence
to impart their skills, knowledge and values to other young
people through a peer education model. The project will involve
120 students, from years 5, 8 and 10, in metropolitan Melbourne
and the rural community of Echuca developing communication
links, sharing ideas and participating in two major meetings
(one in Melbourne and one in Echuca).

The Western Young People's Independent Network will work
with the Equal Opportunity Commission to address issues of
racism and cultural diversity amongst multicultural youth
and the way in which racism impacts on their development and
mental health. The young people will begin by identifying
issues of racism and cultural diversity through a youth forum.
The second part of the project will train young people as
anti-racism mentors to deliver peer education.
