WEST CROYDON ( Adelaide )

State:

South Australia

Amount:

$50,000

Project Summary:

This is a cooperative project involving the Adelaide Secondary School of English and Croydon High School , two schools that share facilities. The project seeks to address racism in the schools and in the wider community by having students, staff and parents working together with outside agencies (community and sporting) to promote cross cultural understanding. The activities will include workshops for staff, students and parents, and joint student representative council meetings. The students will develop a book of personal stories, posters and a calendar to express harmony and anti-racism messages. There will be joint drama and other performance activities exploring racism and cultural diversity, a community expo for Harmony Day, and a combined school assembly for Refugee Day at which all aspects of the projects will be brought together.

About the Organisation:

The Adelaide Secondary School of English provides an intensive English language program for newly arrived students from non-English speaking backgrounds between the ages of 12 and 18 years. It aims to provide students with skills that will enable them to fulfil their rights and responsibilities as citizens, while embracing diversity and forging partnerships with community agencies to assist families and caregivers.
