Living in Harmony Community Grants 2005

South Australia

Organisation:

City of Salisbury

Project Name:

Culture Across the Generations

Suburb:

SALISBURY ( Adelaide )

State:

South Australia

Amount:

$35,950

Project Summary:

This project seeks to promote interfaith and intercultural understanding across generations of community members in the City of Salisbury . It responds to issues of racism and violence, particularly directed at Indigenous, Vietnamese, Cambodian and new and emerging communities (Afghan, Iraqi, Sudanese, Somali and Ethiopian). There has been an incident of race related violence in one school and racist attitudes toward Indigenous people tend to be entrenched. School children (year 6 and 7) from diverse communities and residents of three diverse and Indigenous community retirement villages, together with teachers and others, will explore experiences of growing up, racism, identity and intercultural understanding. Outcomes will be artworks and stories, presented as murals and an illustrated book, which will take the group's message of understanding into schools and the wider community.
