Organisation:

RSL Care

Project Name:

In Perfect Harmony - Cultural Awareness in Longreach

Suburb:

FORTITUDE VALLEY

State:

Queensland

Amount:

$48,000

Project Summary:

Zimbabwean migrants are a new and emerging community in the Longreach area and currently they are experiencing social isolation and disengagement from the local community.  The Zimbabwean community also has a lack of community networks, contributing to social isolation.

This project aims to enhance community perceptions and cultural awareness about the contributions of migrants to the Australian community.  The project will involve training for all local RSL Care staff, including workshops covering Australian values, mutual respect, celebration of diversity and an overview of Australian history.  Updates on the project will be included in the RSL Care newsletter, local media and the publications of government and community organisations involved in the steering group for the project.  There will also be community workshops and celebrations for Harmony Day and Australia Day.
