Living in Harmony Community Projects 2007

QLD

Organisation: Dalby Town Council
Project Name: Welcoming Community Project
Suburb: Dalby
State: Queensland
Amount: $41,000
Project Summary: Rapid demographic change has had a significant impact on community cohesion in Dalby as it has experienced significant internal migration from other parts of Australia as well as the arrival of overseas workers to fill skills shortages. Activities planned include: regular Welcome to Dalby community gatherings; media promotion of the positives that come from cultural inclusiveness; community networks that encourage new arrivals to be active and involved in community activities; local Indigenous Elders and University of the Third Age members mentoring youth; local workplaces forming support networks for their workers that focus on community involvement; and support for a newly formed Women's Indigenous yarning circle, who have recently been welcoming newcomers to Dalby from all backgrounds, to expand and develop a book and CD of songs that can be shared with the community.
