Living in Harmony Community Projects 2007

VIC

Organisation: Australian Vietnamese Women's Welfare Association Inc
Project Name: Stories on a plate
Suburb: North Richmond
State: Victoria
Amount: $43,000
Project Summary: This project seeks to explore the settlement experiences for Horn of Africa and Vietnamese refugees and migrants, including the difficulties in acculturation, integration, social isolation, unemployment and language difficulties.

The project aims to promote Australian culture by connecting Horn of Africa women and Vietnamese women in Australian values workshops and sharing stories. There will be sessions covering Australian culture and etiquette, cultural 'show and tell' and African and Vietnamese food. The project will also involve excursions for the women and their families and development of a buddy program. ‘Stories on a plate’ will be promoted through local media and some of the women's stories will be posted on the organisation's website.
