| Project Name: | Muslim Youth in Sport: a family centred approach |
| Suburb: | Joondalup |
| State: | Western Australia |
| Amount: | $49,751 |
| Project Summary: | The project aims for young Muslim people in the City of Belmont to participate in mainstream community life, particularly organised sports. The project will be a pilot program that addresses feelings of isolation by promoting culturally and religiously appropriate sporting participation among young Muslim people. The plan is to use a family support group to oversee the project dynamics and attract participation of both the youth and their parents. The support group will find placements for the youth in various local sporting clubs. The provision of memberships and equipment will help to overcome barriers that currently limit participation. A Harmony Day activity to bring together the local Muslim community, sporting clubs and local school communities will aid the engagement. An evaluation to be undertaken by University researchers will assist in future expansion of this model. |
