Glenorchy celebrates cultural diversity through poster campaign

Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) Tasmanian State Director Mr Doug Walker, together with the Mayor of Glenorchy City Council, Ms Adriana Taylor, and Glenorchy school students launched the poster campaign, 'Diversity: We Are Who We Are' at Claremont High School in Tasmania, on August 17.

In 2005, DIMA provided Glenorchy City Council with funding through a Living in Harmony funded community project to develop and implement the 'Diversity: We Are Who We Are' program.

Through a series of activities the project engaged the community and encouraged people to show respect for one another and to make a real effort to understand each other, whatever their differences and backgrounds.

A major element of the project was the 'Diversity: We Are Who We Are' public transport poster campaign. The posters created by a local artist feature striking images and quotes by school students and community members in Glenorchy and are now being seen across Tasmania.

During the development of the posters, students participated in interactive sessions led by people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to explore the benefits of cultural diversity. They also experienced food, music and traditions from different cultures.

Local Metro buses are now displaying the posters on 15 bus exteriors and 30 bus interiors within the region.

'The posters are highly visual and are a terrific reminder of the importance of developing greater understanding, respect and acceptance,' said Mr Walker.

'The project has already been an enormous success, involving more than 170 students from five schools in Glenorchy. The schools involved included Springfield Gardens Primary School , Mt Faulkner Primary School, Cosgrove High School , Rosetta High School and Claremont High School'.

The 'Diversity: We Are Who We Are' posters will be featured in Metro buses for the next eight months.
