Bell P – 10 State School Bell, QLD

Tell us a little about how you celebrated Harmony Day

Bell P – 10 State School celebrated Harmony Day with a focus on Japanese Sporting activities which involved all students from Prep – Year 10. Japanese is our Language Other Than English studied from Year 3 – Year 8.

Our Harmony Afternoon commenced with a greeting and explanation of what ‘Undokai” (gathering for exercise) means then a ten minute warm up to “Knees and Toes” in Japanese.

Activities that followed were: The Bean Bag Toss, Janken Pon Warriors, Bamboo Relay Race, Sumo Wrestlers’ Race and Sumo Wrestler Challenge.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon with lots of laughter and fun.

Who were your partners?

Student Council and LOTE Teacher.

What was most memorable about your Harmony Day celebration?

The knowledge gained about another culture through fun activities. The students enjoyed learning “Knees and Shoulders” in Japanese and doing the actions to the song. The High school students had been studying Sumo wrestlers so used this knowledge in the commands and actions given during this activity.

The enjoyment and fun from learning about another culture shone through our Undokai afternoon which was expressed through feedback received from staff and students.
