George Street Neighbourhood Centre’s Multicultural Community Program Mackay, QLD
Tell us a little about how you celebrated Harmony Day
George Street Neighbourhood Centre’s Multicultural Community Program (GSNC) hosted Harmony Day yesterday 21 March 2017 with many guests from our community. We prepared a short program and invited other organisations, agencies and the public to join us celebrate our diversity and raise the local and global awareness on the elimination of racial discrimination and at the same time promote the slogan “everyone belongs”!
Mackay is diversely multicultural and yesterday we had a great representation of the many cultures in the region. It was an awesome celebration and sharing of songs, traditional dances, children’s activities and a few from the audience who shared their thoughts and ideas about Harmony Day and their journeys as migrants in Australia. We had people from Asia, Europe, North and South America, UK and of course Australia and New Zealand.
We then enjoyed a shared multicultural lunch prepared by our valued volunteers, our partner agencies and attendees. We at George Street Neighbourhood Centre are very grateful for the opportunity of celebrating Harmony Day!
Who were your partners?
My name is Georgine and I am the coordinator of the Multicultural Community Program at GSNC. I have been very blessed to have a group of volunteers who are just as passionate and just as dedicated as I am when it comes to event planning and preparation. The success of an event is the team behind the coordinator.
The same goes to our Senior Program Manager ,Admin staff, Community Development Worker and the rest of GSNC team; our partners at Carers Queensland; the TAFE-CQU AMEP Program and their students; Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese groups and the World Cafe Filipino Group.
What was most memorable about your Harmony Day celebration?
The sharing and coming together of many cultures ; a fine example of “everyone belongs”! Going through the photos I couldn’t help but notice the bright smiles from people’s faces.
