Why are we collecting your or your child’s personal information?
The harmony.gov.au website (the website) provides news and resources to the general public about Harmony Day. Harmony Day is an Australian Government initiative and is intended to be a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. The website contains educational resources that the general public can use to celebrate Harmony Day and to assist with the organisation of events and activities.
You can choose to provide your event organiser with consent to share your or your child’s story about how you or your child and your community get involved with Harmony Day with the Department of Home Affairs. If you choose to provide consent, your event organiser may then upload and share your stories and photographs to the website. By sharing part of your story in this way, you can help inspire others.
What personal information will be collected?
We are seeking your consent to collect, use and disclose your photos and any other information about yourself, or your child, that you provide to us for the purpose of promoting Harmony Day.
How will your personal information be used?
If your event organiser submits your story and photographs, we may publish these on the Harmony Day website where they will be able to be viewed by the general public.
The photos and information provided to us may also be shared with Home Affairs staff members (or contractors) who assist Home Affairs with the Harmony Day website and the Harmony Day program.
Home Affairs will only share your photos and information for the purpose of publishing it on this website or considering publishing it on the Harmony Day website, and for no other purpose unless authorised or required under law. Your event organiser will have the option of sharing any information or photographs that they submit to Facebook from the website.
Please be aware that after your information is published to the internet, Home Affairs cannot control the further distribution of the information.
How will your personal information be protected?
Home Affairs takes its obligations under the
Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (‘Privacy Act’) seriously, and your (or your child’s) information will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act. We will only collect, use, disclose and store your or your child’s information in accordance with the law. Home Affairs takes the safeguarding and wellbeing of children very seriously and has developed and operationalised the Child Safeguarding Framework (the framework) which includes direction on filming and photographing children and managing children’s personal or sensitive information. All information passed to Home Affairs under this program will be managed in accordance with the principles and guidance included in the framework and related departmental policies and procedures.

As an individual or an event organiser, you will need to make sure that you own and/or have permission to use the material that you upload. By submitting photographs and stories, we are assuming that you have the right to upload the materials, and the right to allow us to use the materials for the purposes described in this form.

By submitting your information to the Harmony Day website, you:
- acknowledge that you have read (or have had read to you) the information outlined above and understand it
- give consent for the supplied information to be used by Home Affairs in publications and public relations activities for the purpose set out above
- give consent for Home Affairs staff to disclose or use descriptive information about you in photographs and other materials for the purpose set out above
- confirm that you own and/or have permission to use the copyright material that you supply and give consent to Home Affairs to use for the purpose set out above
